What to Expect

At the first consultation, the osteopath will take a thorough case history of your symptoms, as well as asking about information regarding your lifestyle and diet. The osteopath may also observe you making some simple movements to help them form a diagnosis. You will usually be asked to remove some clothing near to the area to be examined.

Osteopaths are trained to examine areas of the body with a highly developed sense of touch, known as ‘palpation’ to determine conditions and identify the bodies points of weakness or excessive strain. Osteopathy is a ‘package’ of care that includes skilled mobilising and manipulative techniques, reinforced by guidance on diet and exercise.

The osteopath will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment plan, estimating the likely number of sessions needed to treat your condition effectively. If the osteopath thinks that your condition is unlikely to respond to osteopathic treatment you will be advised about how you can receive further care. Osteopaths are skilled in diagnostic clinical techniques and have trained to identify when a patient needs referring to another primary healthcare practitioner.

GP Referrals

Whilst both GP’s and dentists commonly refer patients to Taylor Osteopathy, the majority of patients ‘self refer’ for treatment. As referral from your GP is not necessary, patients are encouraged to keep both their doctor and osteopath fully informed. Correctly informing practitioners means that medical records are kept current and complete so that the patient receives the best possible care from both health practitioners.

Health Insurance

Many private health insurance policies provide cover for osteopathic treatment. It may be possible to claim for a course of treatment but you should check in advance with your insurance company before seeking osteopathic help, in order to confirm the available level of cover and whether you will need to have a referral from a GP or a specialist.

Returning Patients

Returning patients will be given an outline of the continuing treatment approach by the osteopath for the following treatment sessions, as part of an informed patient approach.

“Both friendly and professional and explains all you want to know about your treatment.
